Clogged, Old Or Leaking Pipes? Try These Tips!

While it’s the source of life, water is the enemy of a homeowner facing plumbing problems. Beside natural disasters, not many other things can cause more destruction to a home than a serious problem with plumbing. The good news is there are steps that every homeowner can take to stop plumbing nightmares from coming to life, and for fixing them before they get out of control.

If you have a water pipe that freezes, have the tap closest to it turned on so the water can exit while the pipe thaws. This helps decrease any pressure in order to prevent burst pipes. A burst pipe can create damage that is expensive to repair.

If any water pipe that you have freezes, be sure to turn on the faucet that is closes to the pipe to give the water an exit as the pipe thaws. This relieves the pressure contained in the pipe as it also prevents it from bursting, which would reduce the damage done to your house.

Avoid bleach tablets, blue toilet deodorizers or the other odor removers inside your toilet. Both of these may help to eliminate odors from your toilet, but it can also damage the rubber parts of your toilet, causing it to not function probably, or even to break down completely.

While you may find it costly to get your septic tank cleaned out, the cost is much higher to have sewage and backups cleaned up and your septic tank repaired or replaced.

Water that leaves behind pink or orange tinged stains has an excessive amount of iron. A water softener will take care of the issue. This can either be done by yourself, or you can hire a professional to come and take care of.

Never pour grease or anything fatty or oily into your drain. These materials may be liquid when you pour them in, but they will solidify and cause problems. Your garbage disposal is particularly vulnerable to this issue, as the fat solids will slow the motion of the blades. This results in the disposal operating less efficiently. Make certain you dispose of all oils in other places other than the sink.

Flush your drain with a constant stream of cold water when operating your drain mounted disposal unit. Cold water helps to maintain the sharpness of the blades and makes the disposal run more smoothly. Avoid using hot water, as this will liquefy grease, causing it to build up in the drain and obstruct your pipes.

Dishwashers that have too much water running into them could have a hose installed improperly. The hose going from the dishwasher to the sink must go downhill, and then uphill, to prevent water mixing from the two devices.

If you need to buy a pipe cleaner to unclog your pipes, it is best to find one that is enzyme based. These natural bacteria cleaners turn sludge into liquid, and then remove it from the pipes. Enzyme cleaners are preferred by many to clear clogged drains.
