Get rid of pests by going to the root of the problem. If pests have emerged, determine how they are getting food. Pests are attracted to food, water, and shelter. Look to see you do not have food scraps laying around. Plug any potential entryways. Look for sources of water leakage.

Use steel wool to plug in openings where rodents can enter. While rats and mice can easily chew lots of materials, steel wool is too tough. You need to stuff all openings that are bigger than one half of an inch. Animals can get through very small openings.

Anytime you put brushes around your home, ensure you put them a minimum of one foot away. Brush is a natural home to many insects and there is no way to prevent this. Putting brush near your windows and other entry areas will increase the chances of you getting pests.

Bedbugs hide in a variety of locations, making them hard to completely get rid of. Before beginning any type of bedbug treatment, seal any holes in your home. This will help you to be sure that the bugs won’t pop out of the holes after you try and exterminate them.

Look around your house for any cracks or places that pests could enter, and seal them right away. These are one of the most common entry points for bugs into a home. They fit between even the tiniest cracks. Eliminating the crevice can create a barrier between your home and the pests.

Keep up with leaks around your home. Pests love to find those water sources. Interestingly, they sense a water leak, even from a good distance away. You do not want to be invaded by pests in your home. Do a little work and save yourself from having to deal with bugs or rodents in your home.

One pest that is known for being hard to eliminate is fleas. Thankfully, you can use several methods for eliminating fleas and their eggs. The first things to do are to start vacuuming daily and using a flea spray. Don’t forget to throw the vacuum bag in the trash outside when you’re done vacuuming.

If you have a problem with mice and rats, make sure any new trees you plant are sufficiently far from your house. The trees provide a climbing spot for rodents, allowing them to have easy access to your roof. A good rule of thumb is to plant trees no less than 15 feet from the edge of your house.

Outdoor lighting really does attract the pests. Outdoor lighting consisting of orange, yellow and/or pink bulbs will not attract so many pests.

Outside lights have their advantages but you should know these lights will attract pests. If you do prefer to have outdoor lighting running all night, pick colors that attract fewer insects, like orange, pink or yellow.

If your home is infested with insects or other vermin, you may be able to get professional help. Take a trip to your home improvement center and ask the experts about suitable pest control methods. They are trained to know which remedies work effectively for all the different types of pests.

If you struggle with pests, then your solution could be easier than you realize. Visit a home improvement or hardware store near you and ask for professional assistance. They are sure to have ideas about the most effective pesticides for your needs.

Try to block out mosquitoes from coming into your living area. You need to get rid of any stagnant water. Mosquitoes have been proven to breed in spots of water as tiny as what is left in a discarded food can with water still inside of it.

Even if you don’t think you have a problem, routinely check for one. If there is any subterranean area of your home, you may have problems with termites. Get basements and crawl spaces checked out.

Rodents can sometimes enter a camper or trailer that you have parked outside during the winter. There are some natural repellents to keep these annoying pests out of your recreational vehicle, however. When you get small bags filled with the repellents, they are pleasant smelling and will not poison. They are going to just stop mice from getting into your camper or RV.

Avoid using mouse and rat poisons if you have free-running pets in the home. If your pet plays with or eats a dead or sick rat, the poison can get inside it. You should also not use rat poison if you have small children. The pellets can look like candy, and your child may find them and eat them.

Try using plastic storage for storing dry foods. Many dry foods come in bags and boxes, and insects can very easily get inside of them. Shift dry goods to airtight containers when you bring them home. Plastic containers help keep food fresher longer and prevents pests.

Steel Wool

The only way to keep pests from your food is to keep them sealed off. Glass and plastic are both excellent storage container options. Don’t use paper bags or cardboard, because pests can chew through those things.

Put some steel wool in any holes so rodents cannot crawl through. The steel wool will kill the mice when they attempt to eat through it. Fill in the whole with spackle containing steel wool to prevent new holes from being created.

Do you like recycling? If so, then this may be attracting pests. You should keep it outside. If this is impossible, then make sure every piece you place in your indoor bin is rinsed thoroughly. It is best to use sealed recycling containers whenever you get rid of your garbage so that you don’t attract pests.

Exterior lights attract pests to your home. Lighting around your home’s entrance should only be turned on when needed, not left on continuously. Consider using lights with a orange or yellow glow that bugs do not like as much; this will cut down the number of insects going inside your house.

When trying to combat a problem with mice or rats remember this: they’ll eat pretty much anything. Traps can work with jelly, cheese, meat, or other sorts of food. Spoiled food will also draw their interest and can serve as a good trap to catch these pests.

Look around your foundation and check your walls for cracks. As a home ages, it develops cracks and other structural changes. These are able to be used for entry by pests that are small. Be sure to check your ceiling, too. There may be little cracks there where pests come in.

Keep all of your food stored in containers with tight lids if you notice cockroaches in your kitchen. If you have an open container, you must put the entire container in a zip-lock back. It’s also a good idea to transfer loose foods to seal-able plastic containers. Cockroaches will continue to thrive if there is a ready food source. Always keep your flour, sugar, and baking supplies sealed up.

If you find that bugs can easily get into your home, buy some caulk and seal up those cracks. Foggers and bug spray cannot get into the deep recesses of walls and many of the other favorite habitats of pests. The caulking works to seal up cracks, preventing pests from being able to come in and out.

Speak with neighbors for tips. They may be having similar problems given the close vicinity in location. Even better, they may have ideas you’ve never thought of. You may also want to provide your neighbors with some warning of a problem.

Keeping the flowers further from your home helps eliminate insects inside the home as well. If you can, use tiles to cover your home’s perimeter in order to make it difficult for pests to enter. You can leave your windows open without worrying about bugs.

If rodents are your issue, check out your yard. Try to make the yard as inconvenient as possible for these pests. Make sure to destroy all weeds and debris that can make good homes for them. Keep your grass length short, and be sure to get secure lid trash cans. These simple steps will keep most rodents away.

If you have an issue with termites, you have to have a reliable termiticide. Termiticides come in two varieties: the kind that kills and the kind that repels. No matter which you use, you have to be thorough when putting it along your home’s foundation. It takes a lot of the insecticide to work.

If you are considering a professional exterminator to take care of your pest problem, make sure that you do your research on the BBB website to verify that the company has a clean record. Also be sure that this company has a current license for spraying pesticides. Finally, they need to be insured and bonded. This documentation must meet your eyes before letting them step food in your home.

If a raccoon takes residence in your home, you can use oil of mustard to repel it long enough to block its entrance. Leave the oil where there raccoon is living. Once you’ve located the point of entry, seal it off with mesh wire.
